About Geo Nua

As a software developer and historian living by Ireland’s Clew Bay, I’ve always been drawn to maps — not just as tools, but for how they uncover landscapes full of human stories, historical drama, and places to explore. In Ireland, history still speaks through the land — in the names, paths, and sites that bind people to their past and their communities. It’s a geography of memory that also offers visitors a way to understand a place through the traces it carries.

Recognizing how vital these ties are — and how easily they can be lost — I began developing online historical map systems. That soon led me to realize that, despite major advances in technology and the abundance of spatial data, our insight into the spaces we inhabit — and the relationships they hold — is still remarkably small. Out of this, Geo Nua was born.

Geo Nua adds contemporary cartography, serial production, and spatial analysis to our online historical system. Using free global data sources like OpenStreetMap and SRTM, Geo Nua can provide solutions for any part of the world. By combining GIS expertise with advanced IT skills, we push tools like QGIS to their automation limits — delivering projects quickly and at scale. Customer data, census figures, and local knowledge are transformed into maps, dashboards, and atlas eBooks.

By bridging historical and modern maps, we hope to reveal connections that might otherwise remain hidden, fade away, or never be established — as an invitation to explore a world of communities and stories that bring us closer.
